Copywrong

The following is from the Gin Blossoms mailing list. Box of Cassettes was envisioned to be a release of assorted songs and performances that were never officially released. Someone on the list asked about the status of the project, and as can be seen, it was strangled by copyright. Yet another example of copyright failiing to fulfill its purpose. The irony is that the artist wants to release the music, but they are constrained by the system and scheme developed to protect their own interests.

As mentioned previously, this project has been placed on the back
burner. At this point I would be surprised if it saw an official
release. Most likely it will surface as a bootleg somewhere. There
are just too many licensing & legal issues to resolve in order for
the 24 tracks to be put out. It's amazing how cumbersome something
like this can be.
For example...The first track, "Lost Horizons" is the live version
from CMJ complete with the Penn & Teller intro (with the performance
at the corrected speed). This requires two clearances... one from CMJ
and one from Penn & Teller, not to mention the mechanical license
from the publisher.
It would literally cost the band thousands of dollars to clear all of
the tracks. Given the limited appeal of this item, it isn't
financially viable for the band at this time.
